Why the year end is hard
Statements by post, by email, in the van. Some never arrive. Each one is a month of CIS that counts towards your tax bill - or your refund.
A statement that says less was taken off than your bank shows, a month paid across two statements, retention paid months later. Finding which, and why, takes a whole evening at best.
Contractor by contractor, month by month, with every statement accounted for - before they can do your return. The tidier it arrives, the quicker - and cheaper - that is.
How it works
Registered for CIS, not registered, or gross payment status - so every statement is checked against the rate it should have used.
Who paid you this year. Their names and, if you have them, their references.
Type each one in, photograph it, or bring in a spreadsheet of them. Photos and PDFs are kept with the figures.
If you keep a note of your payments, add them, and each statement is checked against them. If you do not, skip it.
Everything found, each with what to do, and the year organised. See it all free, and pay for the pack when you are ready.
An example · made-up figures
| Contractor | Tax month | Statement: taken off | Your records | What the pack says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halloran Construction | 6 May to 5 June | none | £1,140.00 | Statement missing - ask for it |
| Bexley Build & Civils | 6 June to 5 July | £400.00 | £400.00 | Agrees |
| Bexley Build & Civils | 6 July to 5 August | £300.00 | £400.00 | Disagree - check the payment against your invoice and bank |
| R. Nasir | 6 August to 5 September | £360.00 | £240.00 | 30% taken on £1,200.00 of labour - you are registered: ask how they verified you |
Each finding opens to the lines behind it, and goes in your accountant's pack as a question still open until it is sorted.
What the pack includes
The tax year, what you were paid, what was taken off, how many contractors - and what is still missing.
Contractor by contractor and month by month; every statement in a register; payments with no statement; retentions; the reconciliation's results.
The figures for your return, each with its source, the questions still open, an Excel file and a PDF.
Where there is enough to give one, an indicative tax position for a sole trader, with every assumption shown. Never a promise of a refund.
Who it is for
You are paid under CIS
For subcontractors and small construction businesses - sole traders, partners or companies - who have CIS taken off them and want the year organised, without accounting software. Taking CIS off your own subcontractors is a contractor's job, and the CIS Companion's.
Start your packNext year, as you go
Keep every statement in order as it arrives: in Stoneledger with your whole books, or in the CIS Companion beside Xero, QuickBooks or Sage - either way, on both sides of CIS.
Questions
Adding your contractors and statements and seeing everything the pack finds is free. You pay once for each tax year's pack when you want it: the schedules, the figures for your return, the Excel file and the PDF.
No. Your statements and figures stay on your phone or computer, in your browser: the only things sent are your payment, to Stripe, and a count of how far people get through the pack - never a name or a figure. Save a backup now and then - it has your statements' photos in it too.
It cannot promise one. Whether you are owed money back depends on your whole tax position. Where there is enough to go on, the pack gives an indicative estimate for a sole trader, with its assumptions - and your accountant, or your own tax return, decides the rest.
No. It organises your year's CIS so your return - or your accountant - has the right figures. The CIS taken off you is claimed on your Self Assessment return, or by a company through its payroll.
Ask them for it: a contractor must give you a statement within 14 days of the end of each tax month, and a replacement if you lose one. The pack lists every missing month, so you know exactly what to ask for.
Yes - it is made for a phone first: short steps, big buttons, and a photo of each statement taken as you go.
The pack is for CIS taken off you. For CIS you take off others - verifying subcontractors, the CIS300 and the statements you owe - use the CIS Companion or Stoneledger.
No. The pack checks your statements against HMRC's CIS rules and organises your figures, and shows how each is worked out. For your own circumstances, speak to a qualified adviser.
Start with your statements and see what is missing - free. The pack is £20 for the tax year.
The pack organises the figures you give it and checks them against HMRC's CIS rules; it is not tax advice, and it cannot promise a refund.
