Free mileage allowance calculator

How much mileage can you claim?

Business miles in a car or van are 55p a mile for the first 10,000 from 6 April 2026, and 25p after. See what you can claim as a self-employed expense, or what your employer can pay you without tax - and the relief if they pay less.

HMRC's rates

55p from 6 April 2026.

Cars and vans

55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year from 6 April 2026 - it was 45p before - and 25p a mile after that.

Motorcycles and bicycles

Motorcycles are 24p a mile. Bicycles are 20p for an employee using their own; simplified expenses for the self-employed do not cover them.

Rate or real costs

Self-employed, you can use the rate or the vehicle's actual costs. Once you use the rate for a vehicle you keep using it for that vehicle, and you cannot also claim its running costs or capital allowances.
